The Paint Supervisor at the University of Kansas oversees and coordinates the activities of the university's paint and finishes team. This role involves supervising a team of painters, ensuring the timely completion of painting projects across campus, and maintaining the highest standards of quality and safety. The Paint Supervisor works closely with university departments to assess painting needs, develop project plans and execute painting projects efficiently while adhering to budgetary constraints. Additionally the Paint Supervisor is responsible for training new painters, scheduling work assignments, and ensuring compliance with university policies and procedures.

This position requires the operation of a work-issued vehicle and requires the use of digital information systems for communication and resource tracking and planning.

Job Description
40% - Plans and coordinates painting projects across the university campus, including interior and exterior surfaces of buildings, facilities and structures. Includes all wood finishes and paint booth operations. Works directly with campus customers to develop project plans and estimates and ensures timely completion of the projects. Supervise paint team to provide guidance, training and support as needed. Monitor quality and timeliness of assigned work. Work with outside contractors to estimate, procure services and oversee work through completion. Ensure quality and timely completion of assigned contracted work. Ensure safety and adherence to campus standards and policies throughout.

20% - Assists carpentry manager in day to day operations of the carpentry/paint shop. Coordinates with other FS trade shops and other operations units to ensure completion of work.

20% - Maintain accurate records of costs, labor hours, materials used and other relevant documentation through the campus CMMS and time reporting systems.

10% - Conduct performance evaluations, provide feedback and identify training needs to enhance the skills and capabilities of the painting team. Oversee and/or perform all new hire, onboarding, offboarding, employee counselling and termination activities for the assigned units.

10% - Performs other related duties as assigned.
Position Requirements
  • Reach, grasp, lift, carry, and place moderately heavy loads frequently, and heavy loads occasionally (50 lbs) with or without accommodation.
  • Perform work above normal heights, in confined spaces, and in extreme temperatures - both hot and cold, inside, and outdoors. Report to work during declared periods of inclement weather.
  • Respond to after-hours emergencies as needed.
  • Work planned and unplanned overtime as needed.
  • Must digitally enter work order information and perform other electronic communications as required.
  • Must have a valid driver's license by the time of hire and maintain that license throughout employment.
Required Qualifications
  1. High School diploma or completion of a GED equivalency.
  2. Five (5) years of experience in paint/finishes trade maintenance work. Associate's degree or vocational school certification may be substituted for two years of the required maintenance experience.
  3. Three (3) years of experience as a paint/finishes trade supervisor or lead worker.
  4. Experience using MS Office, including Outlook and Excel.
Preferred Qualifications
  1. Computerized Maintenance Management Systems (CMMS) experience - preferably IBM Maximo.
  2. Experience and applied knowledge of safety measures and occupational hazards of the trade.
  3. Experience with specialized finishes - examples: wood finishes, polyurethane, street marking, etc.
  4. Experience working in a large university/college maintenance operation or multi-building operation.
  5. Experience working closely with other building trades like carpentry, electrical, plumbing, HVAC etc.
  6. Excellent leadership, communication, and interpersonal skills.
  7. Experience prioritizing tasks, managing multiple projects simultaneously and meeting deadlines.

Advertised Salary Range
Minimum $55,000 annually ($26.44 hourly). Salary offers increase with relevant experience.
