Job Description

Major Responsibilities:

  • Personnel
    • 1)Maintains efficient exam schedule and workflow
    • 2)Works with Radiology Director to coordinate the hiring of new staff. May be involved in the interview process
    • 3)Addresses staff and patient concerns
    • 4)Prepares time cards and payroll justification
    • 5)Provide input for staff performance reviews, counseling, and disciplinary action
    • 6)Approves requests for PTO
    • 7)Acts as a liaison between Nuclear Medicine and Cardiology
    • 8)Assess staff for technical competence
    • 9)Evaluates exams and makes recommendations for improvement
    • 10)Trains new staff according to department orientation policy. 11. Participates in formal and informal training programs given to staff 12. Instructs and demonstrates specific techniques, positioning and equipment use. 13. Assist director in arranging educational opportunities
  • Operational
    • 1)Coordinates scheduling needs for add-in procedures.
    • 2)Prioritize work and add-on procedures
    • 3)Maintains efficient exam schedule and workflow
    • 4)Equipment troubleshooting and placement of calls for service.
    • 5)Document and report equipment trouble
    • 6)Coordinate preventive maintenance and on-demand service for all equipment
    • 7)Communicate and document all service calls with Vendors
    • 8)Keep staff and Director informed of all equipment and other department issues
  • Quality Improvement
    • 1)Responsible for all required QC testing
    • 2)Train new technologists in proper QC tests and documentation
    • 3)Assists Director with Departmental QA activities
    • 4)Assists Director with keeping policies and procedures updated
    • 5)Assists with ensuring that all exams are performed according to established clinical protocols and federal and state quality guidelines.
    • 6)Assures delivery of patient care in accordance with departmental and Clinic standards.
    • 7)Liaison between Clinic and physicist
    • 8)Point person for addition of new physicians on the nuclear state license
    • 9)Participate in RIE or sustainment as needed
  • Financial Management
    • 1)Monitor and maintain an appropriate supply inventory and coordinate ordering of supplies on a routine or as needed basis.
    • 2)Responsible for verifying that exams are charged and that the charge voucher is complete
  • Clinical
    • 1)Displays competent understanding and operation of Nuclear Medicine equipment * Selection of equipment set-up, appropriate exam protocol, including proper scanning parameters on an individual patient and procedural basis. * Ability to perform appropriate filming format and filming technique * Ability to operate all Nuclear Medicine equipment in a competent manner * Able to modify technical factors as situation warrants * Able to perform start-up and shut down procedures on all equipment * Insures that film tray in printer is filled when needed * Insures that images are labeled with patient identification correctly * Inspects equipment on a daily basis during use * Reports any malfunctions to supervisor. If supervisor is unavailable, contacts proper company for repairs, if needed. * Performs problem solving as situations warrant; i.e., equipment malfunction, and physical limitations of equipment. * Handles all equipment with care
    • 2)Displays competent understanding of patient positioning and image critique * Ability to competently position patients for all Nuclear Medicine exams * Ability to properly utilize appropriate patient immobilization techniques * Perform problem solving as it relates to physical limitations of patient during patient positioning * Competent to perform image reviews to determine if more views are necessary to complete the exam * Able to select and adjust technical factors governing the imaging process * Ability to identify artifacts on film and assist in problem solving * Has minimum amount of repeat work * Able to efficiently communicate normal and abnormal anatomy that is captured on the scans to the Radiologist/Cardiologists
    • 3)Delivery of patient care * Responsible for the welfare and care of all patients directly under their control; i.e., implementation of immobilization devices as necessary for patient safety and comfort * Introduces self and explains exam to patient * Reconfirms patient identification (Red Rules) and verified procedure requested. * Uses scripting when required * Secures history from patients and records on appropriate form for radiologist * Maintains positive customer relations including proper phone etiquette * Professional manner must be displayed in relating to patients, physicians, family members, etc., at all times. * Prepares and administers radiopharmaceuticals and procedural adjunctive medication by proper route per clinician prescription and according to approved exam parameters. Competently performs venipuncture and placement of peripheral IV catheters for medication administration. Accesses other vascular access devices, as determined by department training and need. Follows correct procedures for handling radioactive materials. Understands and implements ALARA measures. Maintains accurate records of pharmaceutical doses. * Ability to recognize contraindications and respond appropriately to adverse reactions to radiopharmaceuticals * Documents allergic reactions according to department protocol
    • 4)Comply with Nuclear Medicine safety * Prepares and administers radiopharmaceutical dosages according to established guidelines * Performs area monitoring and surveys to assess radiation exposure levels and contamination sites. * Follows Federal and State Guidelines to minimize exposure levels. * Performs QC activities based on established protocols. * Provides evidence of ongoing quality assurance activities. * Performs appropriate quality testing on radiopharmaceuticals prior to administration * Evaluate, compare and verify all QC results to established standards and values. * Document all variances from standards * Stores rejected radiopharmaceuticals and prepares new radiopharmaceuticals properly. * Employs devices to decrease radiation levels as needed. * Uses decontamination procedures as necessary.
  • Education
    • 1)Assists with the organization of and participates in educational lectures provided for the community and sponsored by Dreyer Medical Clinic as needed.
    • 2)Participates in and assists in the development of staff in-services, continuing education, and orientation programs.
    • 3)Maintain educational requirements as required for IEMA licensure and NMTCB certification and attend and participate in opportunities that provide professional growth and learning.


Education/Experience Required:

  • * ARRT (N) Registered or NMTCB Certified. * 3-5 years experience as a Nuclear Medicine technologist * 1-2 years experience as a lead or supervisor


Knowledge, Skills & Abilities Required:

  • * Competent degree of technical knowledge to perform Nuclear Medicine studies * Able to make some diagnostic judgments when scanning * Good oral and written communication skills * Good organizational skills * Some computer knowledge * Knowledge of anatomy
  • * ARRT (N) Registered or NMTCB Certified * IEMA licensed * CPR certification required upon hire or within 60 days of hire.


Physicial Requirements and Working Conditions:

  • 1. Ability to work flexible hours 2. Ability to stand for long periods of time 3. Ability to constantly view small CRT screens during exams 4. Willingness to work overtime when needed 5. Work under frequent stress in sensitive clinical settings 6. Responds positively to requests to work on short notice 7. Flexible in start and end times 8. May be exposed to infectious diseases and hazardous materials.
  • If position has direct patient care or direct patient contact the following lifting requirement supersedes any previous lifting requirement effective 06/01/2015. Ability to lift up to 35 pounds without assistance. For patient lifts of over 35 pounds, or when patient is unable to assist with the lift, patient handling equipment is expected to be used, with at least one other associate, when available. Unique patient lifting/movement situations will be assessed on a case-by-case basis.
