About the Department
The 1,800-acre Lake Wheeler Road Field Laboratory (LWRFL) serves as a platform for agricultural research, teaching, and extension. The primary purpose of the Field Lab is to provide land, personnel, expertise, facilities, and equipment to support the academic, research, and teaching mission of the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences.
Essential Job Duties
The Research Technician position supports the agricultural field research operations. As research programs evolve over time, this position may be called upon to do a wide variety of tasks, all related to agricultural research and support. The position will be working outdoors in conditions of both heat and cold, maybe working with field crops, horticultural crops, or livestock, and will be expected to operate agricultural equipment. The validity of the research depends upon the quality of work in the research technician position. This position has diverse responsibilities and will rely on general agricultural and farm maintenance knowledge.

Duties include, but are not limited to:
  • Truck, equipment and vehicle operation
  • Livestock, feed, equipment and crop transport,
  • General farm maintenance,
  • Farm waste management
  • Agricultural duties
  • Operating specialized equipment

Qualifications

Minimum Experience/Education
Demonstrated possession of the competencies necessary to perform the work.
Other Required Qualifications
  • Knowledge of and experience implementing agricultural practices related to production.
  • Must be able to lift 50 lbs. on a routine basis with or without reasonable accommodation
  • Ability to operate agricultural machinery accurately and safely making required adjustments in the field.
  • Ability to communicate in both oral and written form.
  • Ability to collect and record data accurately.
  • Ability to read and follow pesticide labels and research protocols.
  • Ability to calculate chemicals needed and calibrate application equipment.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Two-year degree and four years experience implementing practices related to agricultural production
  • Two years of agricultural research experience or an equivalent combination.
  • Experience with pesticide calibration and application, animal waste systems, and using GPS-equipped machinery and precision agriculture equipment
  • Knowledge of Worker Protection Standards.
Required License or Certification
  • A valid NC Driver's License and the ability to obtain an NC Driver's License within 60 days of hire.
  • A valid Driver's License must be maintained throughout employment.
