Primary Responsibilities

As the Technical Leader of HDR's Highways Business Class (#5 ENR Ranked) you will provide Leadership to over 1,000 Highway professionals at HDR across North America and Australia. The primary duty of the Highways Business Class Global Director is to provide strategic focus on positioning HDR as a preferred service provider in the area of Highway Planning and Design.

Our Highways Business Class Global Director will work closely with our Highways and Road (H&R) Market Sector Director to position HDR as the Consultant of Choice for our Clients across the globe. Additionally, the Highways Business Class Global Director will maintain and grow our traditional highways program, working closely with business development and regional highways leadership to identify needs to meet market drivers and/or create new markets.

It is critical that HDR maintain the highest level of Technical Proficiency in the industry and strive to be unrivaled in our technical prowess. This role will:

  • Support and develop processes that improve technical design capabilities.
  • Continue HDR's leadership in Digital Project Delivery and other technologies.
  • Maintain visibility and participation in Industry related events such as AASHTO national and regional meetings, AASHTO Committee on Design meetings, Transportation Association of Canada, and other national and regional conferences (typically in the US, Canada and Australia).
  • Reinforce and augment HDR's culture of quality, including supporting quality initiatives and program for constant improvement.
  • Provide support with scope/fee development and execution of large highway design projects in conjunction with area and regional design staff.

This role will additionally be tasked with innovating, and evolving the program, to do this we will need to grow service offerings. Some of these include:

  • Supporting key initiatives across HDR's Transportation Business Group.
  • Identifying and promoting future service line opportunities in alignment with the Highways and Roads (H&R) Market Sector Director.
  • Identifying and grow highway design services geographically.

  • Promoting embracing and implementing emerging technologies that create value for our clients.

Recruiting key staff is also an important aspect of this role. The talent we can attract, retain, and grow in our Highways Business Class has been and will be critical to our success. Important activities include:

  • Promoting career development of highways design staff, including providing guidance on training, onboarding, workshare opportunities, staff mentoring, staff recognition, and best practices.
  • Continuously advancing our Highway design capabilities.
  • Participating in the selection of key staff nationally/globally.
  • Identifying strategic hires and/or acquisitions needed for the growth and evolution of HDR's Highways program.
  • Driving initiatives for staff retention, mentorship, and career development.

Other on-going expectations of the role include:

  • Conducting Monthly Coordination Calls with Regional and Area Highways Leadership and Practice Group Leads. These calls are conducted to address several key items including:
    • Review upcoming workload and availability of staff and facilitate work-sharing discussions.
    • Discuss sponsored Practice Group efforts including Digital Project Delivery /Technology, Sustainability, Interchanges, Roundabouts, and Managed Lanes.
    • Identify upcoming Projects and/or Pursuits that need support from the Highways Business Class leadership.
    • Discuss key challenges, business development and QC needs.
    • Provide a summary monthly report to HDR Transportation leadership.
  • Leading annual Highways leadership meetings
  • Reviewing utilization reports to identify staffing needs. Work with Regional Leadership to help meet utilization metrics for business class.
  • Coordinate Best Practices under development by highways business class.
  • Work with Highways Leadership to keep HDR's Highway Design practice State of the Art (e.g. 3D modeling).

* Work closely with the Highways & Local Roads Market Sector Leadership to obtain Yearly Booking Goals and continue growth of the highways business class.

Required Qualifications

* Bachelor's degree in a Professional, Architecture, Engineering or closely related field

* A minimum of 10 years of experience in related field

* Maintains a professional or Engineering registration and has related technical experience

* Experienced in development and management of diverse teams

* Works cooperatively with other business class directors, operations managers, technical directors and marketing managers on business class efforts

* Committed to quality, improvement and HDR values

* An attitude and commitment to being an active participant of our employee-owned culture is a must

Preferred Qualifications

PE license required.

15+ years' experience in Highway Planning and Design with experience in various types of highway related facilities (Local, Regional Arterials, Expressways and Interstate).

Demonstrated ability to work cooperatively with other HDR Market Sector Directors, Business Class Directors, Cross Sector Directors, Regional Business Group Directors, Area Business Group Managers, and Area Business Development Leaders.

Experience with State and Federal (AASHTO) standards required.

Established relationships with major transportation agencies including multiple State DOT's

Well-developed organizational, interpersonal, communication, coordination, mentoring, and leadership skills.

Strong client relationships and project management skills.

Proactive involvement with Industry organizations such as AASHTO, ACEC, etc.

The expected compensation range for this position depends upon skills, experience, education and geographical location. (Stated benefits are for full-time regular positions.
