HDR is hiring a Transportation Hydraulics Principal for our Tampa, Florida office.

The primary responsibility of the Transportation Hydraulics Principal will be to provide in-house leadership and guidance as it relates to transportation hydraulic services as well as serving as a senior technical advisor involving complex technical challenges and delivering projects for clients. This role is responsible for supporting the related stormwater work, project delivery, marketing, vision, and strategy of HDR's Transportation Hydraulics program across Florida offices and multi-disciplinary teams. They will function as a liaison and coordinator for staff across different sections and offices to deliver projects and proposals with innovation, applicable standards, and timely schedules. They will work closely with the project engineers to prepare both planning level and design level projects including drainage reports, contract/bid documents and permit submittals. Collaboration with other design disciplines will be integral to provide innovative solutions and business development opportunities. This role is responsible for identifying and executing, with teams of staff, the Transportation Hydraulic services needed by the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) and other municipal stormwater programs throughout Florida as well as internal services including, but not limited to:

  • Fostering and strengthening relationships with transportation clients and professionals and work with teams to identify opportunities for growth.
  • Mentoring and developing other transportation hydraulic professionals within HDR.
  • Helping local offices with recruiting and attracting highly qualified candidates to join HDR to grow and strengthen the practice.
  • Identifying stormwater professional organizations and conferences for staff participation.
  • Organizing and disseminating industry best practices to project teams and sections of staff.
  • Participating in local and statewide transportation hydraulic marketing initiatives.
  • Leading transportation hydraulic design and planning projects.
  • Understanding state stormwater regulations and manuals.
  • Studying and design of transportation related stormwater management:
      • Stormwater management facilities.
      • Storm sewers
      • Bridge Hydraulics and scour analysis
      • Flooding investigations and analysis
      • Green Stormwater Infrastructure (GSI)
      • Best management practices (BMPs) for water quality treatment
      • Low Impact Development (LID)
      • Resiliency
  • Working to establish a quality culture and support innovative solutions to drive design and technical excellence.
  • Serving as a thought leader for area of expertise to elevate the capabilities of HDR and its professionals.
  • Representing HDR through participation in professional community to build HDR's reputation as a world-class provider of professional services.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering which could include Civil Engineering, Hydraulics, Water Resources, or a related field from an accredited four-year college or university
  • Minimum of 15 years of related work experience, including experience in conceptual, preliminary, and final design of drainage and stormwater projects
  • Minimum of 7 years of Project Management experience
  • Maintains a Professional Engineering registration and has related technical experience.
  • Experienced in development and management of diverse team.
  • Experience with hydrology, hydraulic/drainage design, bridge hydraulics, and stormwater facility design software.
  • Ability to function as a leader and an active collaborator in a diverse multidisciplinary environment.
  • Experience with consulting with and coordinating staff at all levels.
  • Effective communication and presentation skills.
  • Organized and mission driven.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Design-Build project experience
  • Project experience and existing relationships with FDOT and municipal clients
  • Prior business development experience
