General Summary

The Clinical Nurse II is a clinical practitioner who coordinates and implements patient care specific to the age and type of patient population served in the assigned departments. She/he ensures that quality care is provided in an efficient and safe manner, consistent with the unit's standards of care. She/he demonstrates performance consistent with the mission, vision and goals of the unit and organization; remains flexible to changing systems; is expected to demonstrate quality and effectiveness in work habits and clinical practice; and treats patients, families, staff, and physicians with respect and consideration.

Primary Responsibilities

Patient Care Management and Clinical Judgment: Develops, interprets, implements, evaluates and documents a plan of care for each patient using the nursing process, specific to the age and type of patients served. Demonstrates effective decision-making and critical thinking skills coupled with nursing skills acquired through a process of integrating formal and experiential knowledge. Safely performs and documents nursing interventions consistent with nursing care standards and division/department policies.

  • Communication, Advocacy, Collaboration and Diversity: Communicates relevant patient information. Incorporates differences (individual, cultural, spiritual, gender, race, ethnicity, disability, lifestyle, family configuration, socioeconomic status, age, values, and alternative medicine) into the provision of care, involving patient, family and members of the healthcare team.
  • Facilitator of Learning: Communicates knowledge and facilities patient/family/community and staff learning.
  • Caring Practices: Treats everyone in a caring, professional image and instill confidence in the care received. Demonstrates behaviors (vigilance, engagement, responsiveness) which are responsive to the uniqueness of the patient and family and crate a compassionate and therapeutic environment with the aim of promoting comfort and preventing unnecessary suffering.
  • Professional Practices, Innovation, Intuition, and Integrity: Demonstrates commitment to the organizational/department mission, vision, goals, and objectives by incorporating the organization's values into his/her daily work

Qualifications

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Graduate of an accredited school of nursing
  • Currently licensed in the State of Maryland as a Registered Nurse.
  • Successful completion of required hospital, nursing and unit orientation, including but not limited to medication certification.
  • Must have a minimum of eighteen (18) months of clinical experience to apply for advancement.
  • Current certification in ACLS for PACU or eligible for completion of course within six (6) months from date of position. Certification in specialty is preferred.
  • Ability to demonstrate knowledge of the principles of growth and development over the life span and possess the ability to assess data reflective of the patient's requirements relative to his or her age-specific needs, and to provide care needed as described in departmental policies and procedures.
  • Knowledgeable and sensitive to patient's rights in the delivery of care.
  • Communicates in a clear, concise manner appropriate to the developmental stage of the population served.
  • Prefer recent appropriate nursing practice in the patient population areas to be served.
  • Ability to learn and use computer systems in order to manage patient information.
  • Education contact hours required annually, excluding mandatory hospital education requirements.
