General Summary

Under general direction, assess and direct the implementation of staffing, departmental or procedural changes. Coordinate and supervise the support functions including: Business Operations, Materials Management and staff such as Anesthesia Techs and OR assistants. Ensures complete and proper preparation of the department and the operating rooms for patient/case needs. Works with team to run daily OR schedule from a technical perspective. Operates within budgetary parameters, ensures appropriate resources (staff, supplies, and equipment) are utilized based on complexity of procedures, patients and service locations. Provides input on performance evaluations and participates in corrective actions and staff counseling as needed. Coordinate and delegate equipment, supplies, room turnovers, transport of patients, storage of OR beds, equipment, including anesthesia turnover. Coordinate business operations such as financial/budget reports, purchasing, inventory, contracts, vendor management and other related areas.

Reporting Relationships

Reports directly to the Perioperative Services Operations Manager with indirect reporting to the Nurse Manager of procedural areas to which assigned.

Provides supervision of all departmental support personnel.

Working Conditions

Works inside, in a clean well-lighted environment. May be exposed to frequent interruptions and multiple crisis situations. Potential for regular exposure to communicable diseases and hazardous materials, such as chemicals and cleaning agents, requiring the observation of Standard (Universal) Precautions and safe handling practices. May be physically and verbally abused by patients. Expected to work on rotating shifts including weekends and holidays as necessary. May be expected to work on other than regular Unit to provide adequate staffing, if the need arises. Participates in temporary assignment measures of Department of Nursing. This position has been classified as medium exposure risk and requires the completion of an annual respirator mask fitting.

Physical Requirements

Standing, sitting, bending, and walking is required three (4) to five (7) hours/shift. Involves heavy lifting, carrying, pushing, and pulling of patients and equipment weighing in excess of one hundred 100 lbs in accordance with Safe Patient Lifting policy. Fingering, reaching for, grasping, and handling equipment/supplies zero (0) to three (3) hours/shift. Requires hearing/listening to differentiate sounds three (3) to five (5) hours/shift. Visual acuity is necessary to read charts, document, and use various instruments/equipment zero (0) to three (3) hours/shift. Requires appropriate listening and speaking skills to converse with patients, staff, visitors, and physicians zero (0) to three (3) hours/shift.

    DEPARTMENT SPECIFIC DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

    Maintains accountability for meeting basic physical, psychosocial,and environmental needs of the patient.

    Assumes administrative responsibility for specified aspects of unit operations,as assigned by the Perioperative Services Operations Manager

    • Ensures efficiency and consistency of unit operations through implementation and monitoring of departmental policies and standard operatingprocedures.
    • Supports administrative perspective when interpreting policy decisions to staff.
    • Combines ethical judgment with technical skills within the policy and legal guidelines of the organization.
    • Participates in the development and achievement of unit goals and objectives.
    • Recommends changes and improvements to operations, and prepares justification of same.
    • Participates in review and/or revision of unit standards to include policies, Procedures, protocols and standard operating procedures.
    • Leads supply chain inventory

    Assumes responsibility for Human Resources functions, as assigned.

    • Participates in or oversees staffing and scheduling of designated personnel.
    • Completes performance reviews on designated and personnel.
    • Actively participates in recruitment and retention activities for designated area.
    • Coordinates orientation, inservice and continuing education activities with the OR educator

    Ensures material resources are adequate to meet the needs of designated patientpopulation.

    • Identifies alternatives that represent improvement to existing supplies andequipment.
    • Participates in and/or provides significant input into budgeting process for supplies and capital equipment.

    Performs any and all duties involving direct patient care as assigned bythe RN within guidelines provided by the Maryland Nurse Practice Act and hospital policies and procedures. Works in coordination with charge nurse.

    Maintains a clean, healthy, and quiet environment for patients, visitors,and associates. Directs and performs Operating Room environmental responsibilities, patient transfers,and maintains room supplies. Prioritizes duties and directs anesthesia aides/ technicians.

    Maintains effective communication with all levels of the patient care teamutilizing lines of authority appropriately. Trains and mentors new staff.

    Formulates and maintains effective working relationships with all healthcare team members, patients, and significant others.

    Qualifications

    Qualifications

    • AA or AS in business, medical related, supply chain or related degree required. BA or BS in business, medical related, supply chain or related degree preferred.
    • Minimum of one (1) year of experience as an anesthesia tech required.
    • Minimum one (1) year previous experience in a supervisory position required. Two (2) years in a lead responsibilities role in an operating room environment preferred.
    • BLS required.
    • Must understand Budgeting and Materials Management.
    • Must understand the roles and responsibilities of the Operating Room support staff.
    • Must have knowledge of anesthesia equipment and OR equipment.
    • Must be organized and able to work quickly and accurately in a rapidly changing environment.
    • Must be able to follow detailed instructions.
    • Must be able to work under stress and maintain calm during emergency situations.
    • Must be able to delegate, coordinate and follow-up with staff members.
    • Communication skills required to interact with patients and staff at all levels.
    • Computer skills including Outlook, Excel and Word required.
    • Must be able to represent support services and Finance at the management level.
    • Knowledge of computerized inventory system
