Develops, coordinates, and leads distributive and clinical services provided by the Department of Pharmaceutical Services, including supervision of personnel and educational programs offered by the department.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

EDUCATION, CERTIFICATION, AND/OR LICENSURE:

1. Bachelor of Science in Pharmacy OR Doctor of Pharmacy from an accredited school of pharmacy.

2. Must possess current license to practice pharmacy in West Virginia or be license eligible. Licensure must be completed within 60 days.

EXPERIENCE:

1. Completion of a health system pharmacy administration residency programAND2 years of administrative experienceOR;

2. Completion of non-health system pharmacy administration residency programAND3 years of administrative experienceOR;

3. Five years health-system pharmacy administrative experience.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

EDUCATION, CERTIFICATION, AND/OR LICENSURE:

1. Master of Business Administration, Master of Health Administration, Master of Science in Health-System Pharmacy Administration, or Master in Public Health

2. Board Certification in a clinical pharmacy specialty

1. Develops and implements processes, within assigned teams, through orientation, training, and education to ensure that the competence of all staff members is assessed, maintained, improved, and demonstrated throughout their employment.

2. Develops systems and provides feedback to the Director to monitor the safety and effectiveness of drug distribution within assigned areas of responsibility.

3. Develops and, with approval, implements programs, systems, and services to provide drug distribution and clinical services that meet or exceed national standards for patients at WVU Medicine.

4. Formulates and refines systems used in the provision of pharmaceutical care to patients.

5. Directs the activities of staff, within assigned teams, and monitors performance, clarifies work expectations and promotes cooperation among individuals and groups.

6. Performs personnel functions such as interviewing, hiring and performance management of direct-report employees.

7. Ensures that hospital and department policies and procedures are followed.

8. Investigates and studies trends and developments in pharmacy practice; develops policies and procedures and operational manuals; introduces new products and procedures to staff within their assigned teams and responsibilities.

9. Assures the development of policies, procedures and other orientation and training materials to support clinical and operational services.

10. Identifies, seeks approval for and with approval implements new products, technology, and procedures to improve clinical and distribution operations.

11. Works with the Director to determine product standards and assure compliance with national standards and regulatory requirements.

12. Assists in the preparation of the annual budget for the Department of Pharmacy; monitors budget and other financial indicators during the year. Assists in the development and implementation of plans to control costs and improve departmental operations.

13. Assists the Director in the preparation of the annual labor, non-labor and capital budgets as requested.

14. Ensures delivery of pharmacy services within budgeted level of resources.

15. Develops, and with approval, implements systems to promote safe and effective use of pharmacy resources.

16. Assists the administrative team to develop and maintain performance improvement indicators and programs to improve quality of service and optimize patient safety.

17. Works todevelop,implement and effectively respond to performance improvement indicators that routinely assess pharmaceutical services and promote improvement in the quality of services provided.

18. Assures adequate and timely submission of data and reports for performance improvement activities.

19. Establishes systems to encourage effective communication and working relationships between pharmacy employees and other healthcare professionals.

20. Takes a proactive and innovative approach to problem identification and resolution.

21. Maintains professional knowledge and skills by active participation in continuing education activities.

22. Maintains professional society involvement (local, state and national).

23. Precepts pharmacy students and pharmacy Residents.

Additional Job Description:

This Assistant Director of Pharmacy position will oversee all acute care adult clinical services and education services within the Department of Pharmacy. Oversight includes inpatient clinical divisions as well as the WVU Hospitals Pharmacy Residency Program. The position is supported by three managers reporting directly to the Assistant Director. Prior leadership experience in the acute care setting is expected.
