Job Description

We are seeking a Research Assistant. The Schaufele Program for Prostate Cancer in Black Men is a unique program at Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine with a tripartite mission to advance scientific understanding of aggressive prostate cancer in Black men and in all men; educate future and current scientists and healthcare professionals about the biological, environmental, socioeconomic, and other variables relevant to prostate cancer in Black men; and create a community-based and community-serving program that measurably reduces the burden of prostate cancer in the Black communities of Baltimore and Washington DC.


Specific Duties & Responsibilities

  • Participation in prostate cancer research studies focusing on public-health disparities.
  • Assist with study design of protocols and contributes to SOPs and MOPS.
  • Maintain a detailed knowledge of all assigned protocols and reporting requirements.
  • Adhere to all protocol requirements to ensure validity of clinical research data.
  • Participate in development, testing, and evaluation of manuals, questionnaires for the efficient collection of data.
  • Interact with clinicians and other gatekeepers to access the patient population.
  • Maintain paper and computerized research files.
  • Monitor and maintain supply of research supplies and order as needed.
  • Participate in weekly research group meetings.
  • Track study progress and create reports noting progress.
  • Involvement in community-based initiatives in prostate cancer
  • Participate in the selection of potential research participates in prostate cancer research studies.
  • Attendance in educational seminars in the Johns Hopkins Doctoral Diversity Program (DDP)
  • Enter data into a computer database; assist in implementing data validation and a data management plan.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor's Degree in related discipline.
  • Additional related experience may substitute for required education, to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.


Preferred Qualifications
  • Recent college graduate with a record of successful completion of introductory biology and/or other science courses in college and commitment to and record of inclusionary conduct in work, educational, and social contexts.
  • Working towards application to medical or graduate school.
  • Have a sincere desire to serve populations affected by social inequities, including underrepresented groups.
  • Desire to complete 1-2 years of laboratory or public health-based research on prostate cancer.

Starting Salary Range: $17.00 - $30.00 HRLY ($48,880 targeted; Commensurate with experience)

JHU Equivalency Formula: 30 undergraduate degree credits (semester hours) or 18 graduate degree credits may substitute for one year of experience. Additional related experience may substitute for required education on the same basis. For jobs where equivalency is permitted, up to two years of non-related college course work may be applied towards the total minimum education/experience required for the respective job.

The pre-employment physical for positions in clinical areas, laboratories, working with research subjects, or involving community contact requires documentation of immune status against Rubella (German measles), Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Varicella (chickenpox), Hepatitis B and documentation of having received the Tdap (Tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis) vaccination. This may include documentation of having two (2) MMR vaccines; two (2) Varicella vaccines; or antibody status to these diseases from laboratory testing. Blood tests for immunities to these diseases are ordinarily included in the pre-employment physical exam except for those employees who provide results of blood tests or immunization documentation from their own health care providers. Any vaccinations required for these diseases will be given at no cost in our Occupational Health office.
