Position Summary:

Under the direct supervision of a Supervisor assists staff Anesthesiologists in preparing and performing a variety of anesthesia preparations and procedures in the operating rooms and in remote anesthetizing locations. Acts as a member of the Anesthesia team by preparing the patient/machine interface for the delivery of anesthesia and the management of the patient during surgery. Assists in the sterile and aseptic preparation of the patient for the placement of pulmonary artery, central venous and, arterial and venous monitoring lines. Maintains all anesthesia equipment before, during and after the operative procedure. Obtains physiologic samples for analysis, obtains physiologic readings by using invasive monitors and provides data to the anesthesia team responsible for the Critical Care Management of the patient during the surgical process. Prepares all equipment to be used in the operative care of the anesthetized patient and performs all duties as outlined in the Departmental guideline manual. These duties are performed at the direction of the Anesthesiologist, Nurse Anesthetist staff (CRNA), ACCM Operations Manager, or Supervisor.

Is proficient in the application of all anesthesia preparations and procedures in the operating room setting and in remote anesthetizing locations. Supports the anesthesia team by preparing, maintaining, and cleaning equipment used within an anesthetic course. Is proficient in the use of sterile and aseptic technique when assisting in introducing invasive lines into the patient. Is proficient in processing equipment used in anesthesia and the management of the anesthetized patient. Is proficient in troubleshooting anesthesia equipment failures as a first responder. Is proficient in caring for different age patients and is aware of the special needs of these patient populations. Is proficient in setting up anesthesia equipment, monitoring, and rapid blood delivery devices, for intra-operative and post-operative use. Draws samples for laboratory analysis. Readies anesthesia equipment for subsequent use at the end of each case and as directed in the departmental policy and procedure manual. Maintain all anesthesia equipment, instruments and supplies before, during, and after the operative procedure.

Provide prompt, courteous customer support, including but not limited to the dependable diagnosis of simple equipment failures and malfunctions and support hospital intubation program (within and outside the operating rooms).Participates in the training/orientation of new staff members to the operating room setting. Functions as an Anesthesia Technologist under the supervision of a Technical Staff Supervisor or Manager. Assists staff Anesthesiologists in performing the most technical of anesthesia preparations for procedures in all anesthetizing locations. Supports the operation of anesthesia by preparing, maintaining, cleaning, and when possible repairing equipment used during the anesthetic course. Works independently and participates in the on-call rotation to support emergency O.R. cases, cardiac and transplant cases. Participates in the training/orientation of new staff members as Critical Care Technicians and Anesthesia Technologists.

Education:

Requires a minimum of an Associate Degree in an allied health or life science discipline. Experience beyond the work experience requirement may be substituted for the degree on 2 years of experience for 1 year of education basis i.e. 4 years.

Work Experience:

Minimum three years employment as an Anesthesia Technician or Technologist at JHH.

Licensure/Certification:

Track 1: Position requires certification as either a Technician or a Technologist by the American Association of Anesthesia Technologists and Technicians (ASATT). BLS certified if technician; ACLS certified if Technologist.

Track 2: Meets requirements of CCTIII (without ASATT technician certification) and must achieve Cert Technologist, EMT (A, B, or Paramedic), or A.S or BS equivalent (in pre-health major) or higher with CCT or anesthesia tech experience)

* BLS required and/or will be completed within 1-3 months of hire
* ACLS required within three months of hire

Knowledge/Skills:

  • Position requires the ability to teach and apply the following:
  • Proficiency in life support techniques and theory, electrocardiograms, airway support devices, peripheral line access devices, pressure waveforms, and cardiac output measurement
  • Knowledge of physiologic monitoring devices and techniques
  • Proficient in the use of sterile and aseptic technique
  • Understands medical terminology as attained through allied health or medical training, or completion of medical terminology course
  • Proficient in patient care procedures related to administration of anesthesia and care of the anesthetized patient
  • Knowledge to interpret physiologic monitoring parameters during the application of these devices.
  • Competent in using all ancillary equipment used in the operative care of the anesthetized patient and performs all duties as outlined in the Departmental guideline manual and obtained through work experience
  • Proficient in life support techniques and theory, such as electrocardiogram, airway and peripheral line access devices
  • Proficient in the operation of physiologic monitoring devices, as attained through work experience.
  • Proficient in of aseptic technique
  • Requires knowledge of medical terminology as attained through college level anatomy & physiology course or completion of medical terminology course
  • BLS required and/or will be completed within 1-3 months of hire
  • ACLS required within three months of hire
  • Set up and operation of physiologic monitoring equipment as per departmental guidelines.
  • Troubleshooting equipment failures
  • Interpreting and communicating abnormal waveforms present on vital sign monitors and laboratory results
  • Organizing and summarizing information
  • Assists the physician or CRNA in the care and management of the anesthetized patient
  • Anticipating physician needs during routine and emergency situations
  • Using a computer to input and obtain data.
  • Requires effective verbal communication and interpersonal skills to establish working relationships with co-workers and physicians and other health care personnel that optimize patient care.
  • Ability to work independently and under stressful conditions.
  • Ability to understand and utilize decontamination techniques such as pasteurization, glutaraldehyde, ethylene oxide, steam sterilization, and gamma radiation.
  • Understands basic and proper mechanical function of anesthesia circuits and machines and similar equipment as it relates to patient care in the operating room.
  • Ability to mentor and precept new employee and junior staff
