Job Description

Major Responsibilities:

  • Provide specialty behavioral and psychotherapy services to families and children with a focus on children with comorbid developmental and behavioral/ mental health issues and diagnoses, including both individualized and group services, with treatment goals based on the results of diagnostic evaluations, prognosis, and case histories as well as discussion with the patient, family, physicians, teachers and other health care providers.
    • 1)Completes assessments based on parent report and observation of child to support evidence-based decision making for goals.
    • 2)Develops measurable short term goals and revises them as patient progresses through treatment.
    • 3)Develops functional, realistic, achievable long term goals that reflect patient and family's potential and interest.
    • 4)Determine the appropriate modality of combination of modalities needed for therapy, including ABA techniques, structured teaching, cognitive behavioral, parent-child focused, and supportive psychotherapy.
    • 5)Provide behavioral and psychotherapeutic treatment services that include specialty techniques aimed at this population.
    • 6)Provide parent training and incorporate parents into the therapeutic process. Prepares and presents workshops and training for parents in the treatment program.
    • 7)Provides treatment consistent with patient's ability and modifies treatment as indicated to attain goals.
    • 8)Discharges patients with appropriate plan. Makes recommendations for appropriate transitions within a continuum of care and follow-up activities.
    • 9)May provide initial needs assessment, including collects pertinent patient historical information, identifying service provision plan at the Pediatric Developmental Center, and identifying appropriate referrals sources or referral appointments if needed.
    • 10)Maintains or exceeds appropriate productivity levels as determined by the clinical manager.
  • Case Management and consultative services. Communication of patient-related information to other health care providers to facilitate continuity of care and implementation of treatment recommendations, as well as consultative services, for example providing specific treatment recommendations and interventions to school staff.
    • 1)Confers with patients, physicians and other health care providers.
    • 2)Confers with school and other educational support service providers.
    • 3)Provides consultation services to teachers and schools to help them manage the behavioral and emotional problems of children.
  • Documentation
    • 1)Prepares and maintains patient reports, progress notes and related records in a thorough, organized, accurate manner.
    • 2)Documents according to guidelines set forth by Accrediting Organization and other appropriate monitoring agencies.
  • Participation in professional development
    • 1)Attends in services within the department as well as outside conferences as appropriate.
    • 2)Keeps informed of changes occurring within the field of behavior treatment as well as within Advocate Healthcare.
    • 3)Prepares presentations to educate consumers and the professional community.
    • 4)Shares information obtained at continuing education events with peers.
  • Participation in ongoing process improvement, quality assurance and safety programs.
    • 1)Develop therapeutic programs, groups, workshops and initiatives.
    • 2)Provides data and input required for quality assurance indicators.
    • 3)Participates on process improvement teams.
    • 4)Evaluates environmental safety and provides safe environment based on age and developmental status of patient.
    • 5)Follows hospital infection control and safety protocols.


Education/Experience Required:

  • Master's Degree in Social Work, or Master's Degree in Psychology, or Master's Degree in Clinical, Counseling, or Master's Degree in Education, or Master's Degree in Behavior Analysis.
  • Typically requires 1 year of experience in providing therapy in behavioral health with children/adolescents (preferably including children with developmental disabilities)


Knowledge, Skills & Abilities Required:

  • Skilled as a generalist and has one or more specializations. Strong knowledge and skills in the application of theory, practice and techniques of behavioral health including children/adolescent with developmental disabilities. Able to perform duties independently with moderate supervision (at a minim of 1 hour per week) Good written and verbal communication skills. Demonstrates the ability to function in a complex mental health delivery system.
  • Board Certified Behavior Analyst (BCBA), Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC), Licensed Social Worker (LSW), working towards completion of a master's degree in behavior analysis, counseling, social work, or related human service field.


Physical Requirements and Working Conditions:

  • Will frequently be required to lift up to 25 lbs. without assistance, and will occasionally be required to lift over 25 lbs. with assistance. May be exposed to the following hazard: mechanical, electrical, chemical, blood and body fluids. Must be able to sit, stand, walk, squat, bend, and reach above shoulders and twist. Must be able to restrain and control patients who are physically combative. Operates all equipment necessary to perform the job.
