The Educational Specialist II - Secondary Literacy (9-12) is located within the Office of Literacy, Languages, and Culture and will support secondary literacy efforts within Baltimore City Public Schools (City Schools), including but not limited to assessments, curriculum, and professional development. The secondary literacy specialist will assist with the development and ongoing improvement of curriculum aligned to both the Maryland College and Career-Ready Standards and the City Schools Instructional Models for Literacy for grades 9-12. They will work with partners and vendors to identify quality practices and resources as well as design professional development to support teaching and learning in the district.

Essential Functions
  • Supports the implementation of the Maryland College and Career-Ready Standards for Literacy in grades 9-12.
  • Develops and delivers ongoing professional development around best practices in secondary literacy for grades 9-12.
  • Develops curriculum and assessments for grades 9-12.
  • Uses data collected to strategically support the needs of teachers and schools in the district.
  • Develops and provides appropriate guidance for schools and school leaders on best practices in literacy.
  • Works collaboratively with a highly-motivated team from multiple offices to advance teaching and learning in the district.
  • Stays up to date on current research and best practices in the area of secondary literacy content and pedagogy.
  • Performs and promotes all activities in compliance with equal employment and nondiscrimination policies; follows federal laws, state laws, school board policies and the professional standards.
Maximum Salary 96589.00
Minimum Salary 73695.00
Desired Qualifications
  • A valid Maryland State Department of Education Advanced Professional certificate.
  • A Master's Degree in education or related field. Degree must be from an accredited college or university.
  • Three years teaching experience in secondary literacy, grades 9-12.
  • Three years' experience developing and delivering professional development to teachers in urban school settings.
  • Experience managing large scale projects.
  • Knowledge of current research in secondary literacy best practices.
  • Knowledge of the Maryland College and Career-Ready Standards for Literacy.
  • Ability to lead and motivate a productive team of individuals.
  • A commitment to educational equity.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Proficient in the use of multiple computer applications including, but not limited to, Microsoft Office, PD Tracking and reporting software, databases, and Online Professional Learning software.
  • Knowledge of laws, regulations, rules and policies affecting City Schools' educators.
