HJF is seeking a Computational Biologist III will serve as a lead analyst for CMPH in the Data Science Division. They will analyze sequencing data generated at our genome center in order identify pathogenic variants, subtypes and genetic signatures associated with specific diseases through bioinformatics and machine learning methods. Sequencing data to analyze will include spatial sequencing, single cell sequencing, whole genome, bulk RNA sequencing. This is an exciting opportunity to be a lead analyst for genomics studies, make primary contributions to genome research publications, and have opportunity for scientific and career growth.

This position will be in support of the Center for Military Precision Health (CMPH) located at Uniformed Services University (USU) in Bethesda, Maryland. HJF provides scientific, technical, and programmatic support services to CMPH.

Note: This work site requires that Non-US Citizen incumbents have lived in the US three out of the past five years.

Responsibilities
    Serve as a lead analyst for genomics research studies, spanning analysis plan development, data quality analysis, computational hypothesis testing, and results interpretation.
  • Develops new computational analysis tools, workflows, and visualizations for new sequencing protocols
  • Describe results and figures through writing scientific manuscripts to submit to peer-reviewed journals and conferences.
  • Delivers analysis presentations and coordinates discussion on scientific teleconferences among collaborators.
  • May supervise junior informatics staff and perform other duties and responsibilities as assigned or directed by the supervisor. This may include attendance of and participation in required training for role.

Qualifications

Work Environment

  • This position will take place primarily in a office setting.

Education and Experience

  • Master's Degree required. Doctoral Degree in Computational Biology, Bioinformatics, Biostatistics, Computer Science or related discipline preferred.
  • Minimum of 6-8 years experience required.

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Research experience in bioinformatics and genomics research demonstrated through publications.
  • Solid knowledge of informatics tools and visualization/data mining packages and a proven aptitude for optimally adapting them to specific problems.
  • Programming experience in several programming languages such as R, Python, Perl, SQL, and others. Publication of standalone software is a plus.
  • Experience with large scale sequencing analysis (single cell, spatial sequencing, RNA, whole genome sequencing, and/or whole exome sequencing), bioinformatics, and machine learning.
  • Experience with cloud analysis environments is a plus.
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively as part of a team.
  • Excellent communication and analytical skills.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a T1/Public Trust background check

Supervisory Responsibilities

  • Assigned Lead: May recommend the following: employee hiring, disciplinary action, and starting salaries; provide input on employee performance evaluations.

Some positions or sites may require that the incumbent be fully vaccinated against COVID-19. Proof of vaccination may be required.
