The Department of Environmental Health and Engineering seeks a part-time (or graduate) motivated and goal-oriented Research Assistantto support research in assessing potential health benefits and other effects related to the human-animal bond among racial and ethnic minority pet owners who are at increased risk in experiencing negative mental and physical health outcomes. The goal of this work is to identify human-animal bond characteristics that may be associated with improved mental and physical health outcomes among pet owners compared to non-owners, particularly for racial and ethnic minorities who are commonly neglected in human-animal bond health studies.
Under direct supervision of Faculty PIs, Dr. Meghan Davis and Dr. Roland Thorpe, and Postdoctoral PI, Dr. Sharmaine Miller, the Research Assistant will support a HABRI-funded Project by reaching out to and recruiting pet-owners and non-owners from diverse backgrounds for an online Survey. Research assistants will recruit participants across the Mid-Atlantic Region via in-person (if feasible per COVID-19 trends) and email/telephone methods via self-created marketing materials, approved by project PIs. Research assistants must also demonstrate the ability to work pro-actively to meet recruitment goals across the 9-month survey deployment period.
This is a two-year position, as so, preference will be given to those that can stay on for the full work period.

The pre-employment physical for positions in clinical areas, laboratories, working with research subjects, or involving community contact requires documentation of immune status against Rubella (German measles), Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Varicella (chickenpox), Hepatitis B and documentation of having received the Tdap (Tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis) vaccination. This may include documentation of having two (2) MMR vaccines; two (2) Varicella vaccines; or antibody status to these diseases from laboratory testing. Blood tests for immunities to these diseases are ordinarily included in the pre-employment physical exam except for those employees who provide results of blood tests or immunization documentation from their own health care providers.
