The University of New Mexico (UNM), School of Medicine (SOM) seeks to recruit a Faculty member to serve in a Part-time capacity (0.8 FTE) as the Senior Associate Dean for Education, which reports to the SOM Dean and leads the SOM medical student and health professions programs and SOM educational initiatives. The remaining .20 FTE in the candidate's department. We are seeking an Associate or Full Professor, open track. This position is available beginning October 1, 2023, and a later date can be negotiated, as needed, for the successful applicant.

The Senior Associate Dean will be responsible for leadership, management, and oversight of the following SOM education program offices:

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Responsible for the oversight of all medical education programs housed in the School of Medicine (SOM)
  • Provide guidance, support, and mentoring for leaders of all SOM education programs
  • Advocate for education with stakeholders and leadership at the highest levels of administration
  • Promote evidenced based learner-centered instruction
  • Lead and maintain accreditation for all programs
  • Collaboratively develop and implement strategic plans for education programs, in alignment with updated SOM and HSC strategic plan and goals
  • Works in collaboration with leaders of the BA/MD program
  • Works in collaboration with leaders of the MD/PhD program
  • Oversight and Support of CQI and self-study process for MD program LCME accreditation, in collaboration with CQI Director, UME Associate, and Assistant Deans, Student Affairs Associate and Assistant Deans, Office of Admissions Associate and Assistant Deans, Director of Learning Environment Office, Chief Wellness Officer, and SOM Office for Diversity.
  • Oversight and Support Assistant Dean, Office of Education and Health Profession programs with accreditation for Health Professions programs
  • Support an education leadership team including Associate and Assistant Deans, Directors, Health Professions program Directors, and senior administrative staff
  • Develop, implement, and evaluate performance goals and outcome measures for associate and assistant deans and program directors/leaders in education
  • Ensure strong integration of community-based programs through the Preceptorship Office, Office of Community Faculty, Rural and Urban Under-served Program, BA/MD, and community-based site preceptors for both Health Professions students and MD students.
  • Authority and responsibility for financial and administrative operations in Office of Education, including discretionary spending focused toward highest priority needs. Ensure that requests are prioritized and included at time of yearly budget development.
  • Work with EDO and the Chief Wellness Officer to promote the inclusion of DEI/anti-racism and well-being across the SOM
  • Promote learner centered instruction, emphasizing evidence-based education pedagogy
  • Meet with Department Chairs (at least yearly) and Vice Chairs for Education regularly (quarterly as a group and individually as needed) to update on curriculum and faculty development opportunities, share data on departmental participation, ensure adequate contribution, ensure engagement in faculty educational development, enhance educational scholarship and continuing focus on student progress in the MD curriculum
  • Ensure UME and Health Profession's involvement in LEO (Learning Environment Office). Work collaboratively with LEO staff in addressing learning environment issues.
  • Advocate with health system leadership for learners in clinical settings at Health System entities.
  • Work collaboratively with the Office of Professional Well-being
  • Flexibility in adapting to new educational strategies

Qualifications

Minimum Education and Experience:

  • MD, DO or equivalent medical degree
  • Demonstrated expertise appropriate for appointment as an Associate Professor or Professor in the University of New Mexico, School of Medicine
  • Five years of leadership experience in medical education (either preclinical or clinical)

  • Demonstrated record of accomplishment in program development and innovation
  • Leadership and management skills, ability to create a shared vision
  • Experience working with a diverse group of professionals and students
  • Successful advocacy for resources
  • Exceptional communication skills, with a demonstrated ability to foster collaboration and teamwork.
  • Interpersonal skills as evidenced by student, resident, or faculty advisement and mentoring
  • Previous service on a SOM education committee
  • Engagement with regional and national educational leaders and experts (e.g. LCME, AAMC involvement, discipline, or specialty based education programs)
  • Successful collaborations with other departments and programs
  • Participation in the LCME or other accreditation processes
  • Experience or interest in educational scholarship
  • Demonstrated understanding of New Mexico values, strengths, and healthcare needs/opportunities
  • Knowledge of new educational platforms, technologies, and best practices
  • Demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion of student, faculty, and staff success, as well as working with broadly diverse communities
