Primary Responsibilities
HDR is looking for a Freight Rail Bridge Engineer / Bridge Inspector to join our Transportation Business Group in Anchorage, AK. The primary duties will be to lead the development of railroad bridge and other structural design plans, specifications, and cost estimates for a variety of projects with Class I railroads, shortlines, industrial and transit clients and to manage small projects. Structural engineering assignments may include performing bridge engineering/design calculations, developing structural details, using specialized software (AutoCAD, MathCAD, LARSA or various concrete and steel design or analysis programs), inspecting bridges and performing load rating calculations as well as assisting with geometric layout, writing specifications and developing cost estimates. Some CAD plan production may also be required.
The Bridge Engineer/ Inspector will be expected to assist with performing local and national bridge inspections and requires familiarity with a broad spectrum of bridge inspection equipment, methods, and processes. The candidate will conduct National Bridge Inspection Standards (NBIS) inspections, write field inspection reports, and perform basic mathematical calculations. Field inspections will be performed from ground level, hydraulic equipment, ladder access, or using rope access techniques. This position requires physical ability to perform field inspections of in-service bridge and culvert structures, tunnel structures, highway structures, railroad structures, overhead sign structures, hydraulic structures, and metal traffic signal poles. Physical demands include positioning extension ladders, maneuvering small boats, driving long distances, confined space, air travel, occasionally working at night, and walking long distances on uneven surfaces. Candidate should expect exposure to environmental hazards, such as, but not limited to, warm and cold temperatures, water, work-at-height, poisonous plants, snakes, ticks, spiders, and other creatures.
Project management responsibilities may include managing project scope, budget and schedule as well as development of design criteria, project guides, project meeting notes, and project controls. This individual must be able to direct and mentor junior staff. This position may require periodic client visits, site visits, field assessments, and construction inspection, as needed.
