Job Description

Related positions are contingent on board approval.

Supports the work of the Transformation and Turnaround office, including providing direct support to schools identified within the tiered systems of support and/or officially designated as Priority, Focus, or Turnaround Schools by MSDE. The Educational Specialist will assist with the development of curriculum and professional development aligned to both the Maryland College and Career-Ready Standards and City Schools' Instructional Models for Literacy. Serves as a district expert in literacy interventions, for grades 6-12.

Essential Functions
  • Develops and delivers ongoing professional development around best practices in secondary literacy instruction.
  • Supports the implementation of district literacy initiatives.
  • Participates in the evaluation and selection of instructional materials.
  • Supports teachers and school teams as needed with the implementation of literacy curriculum and best practices.
  • Coordinates and develops curriculum and assessments for literacy.
  • Uses data collected to strategically support the needs of teachers and schools in the district.
  • Works collaboratively with a highly motivated team from multiple offices to advance teaching and learning in the district.
  • Performs and promotes all activities in compliance with equal employment and nondiscrimination policies; follows federal laws, state laws, school board policies and the professional standards.
Maximum Salary 102817.00
Minimum Salary 78447.00
Desired Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in education or related field from an accredited college or university; Master's degree or doctorate degree preferred.
  • Three years teaching experience in secondary literacy; urban experience preferred.
  • Valid Maryland State Department of Education (MSDE) Advanced Professional Certificate required.
  • Ability to design and deliver professional development.
  • Experience creating secondary literacy curriculum.
  • Experience coaching teachers and/or school teams to improve practice.
  • Knowledge of current research, best practices, and adult learning.
  • Detailed knowledge of the Maryland College and Career-Ready Standards for Literacy.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, including the ability to make persuasive presentations.
  • Interpersonal skills that ensure effective teambuilding and understanding for the team process.
  • Skilled in interpreting, understanding, and applying data.
  • Proficient in the use of multiple computer applications including, but not limited to, Microsoft Office, PD Tracking and reporting software, databases, and Online Professional Learning software.
