Job Description

IT@JH Office of the Deputy CIO is seeking an IT Director, Research IT who will report to theVP/Deputy Chief Information Officer, this position leads the research IT organization and its drive towards supporting and advancing the tri-partite mission. The position will partner with collaborators across all institutional components and be a key decision maker in the IT@JHU organization.


Specific Duties & Responsibilities

  • Accountable for establishing and growing the research IT organization within the IT@JH organization, with key partnerships with enterprise, clinical, and administrative IT teams.
  • Works directly with research teams and university and medicine leadership to design and manage the program, including roadmaps, services, and governance structures. The position will serve on committees and working groups as well as initiate short-term groups for product evaluation and recommendations and serve as lead on the university research IT committee.
  • Serves as a point of escalation for issues, concerns, and celebrations for the University research IT organization within IT@JH.
  • Facilitates the translation of opportunities into technical strategies and those into technical services and implementations.
  • Works in a collaborative manner with key components of the IT@JH teams to deliver these services to researchers. IT units include, but are not limited to, enterprise infrastructure, networking, research administration, education IT, cloud services, information security, research data analytics and engineering, and healthcare IT.
  • Ensures the research IT program operates as a high performing team, establishing a collaborative and positive culture within the organization. They will recruit and retain high performers that not only have strong technical skills, but also fit within the team and the Hopkins community. They will help inspire individuals to grow in their field and help them see how they contribute to the overall Hopkins mission and objectives.
  • Works with the research community to establish communities of practices and facilitate the sharing of information. The position will lead efforts to strengthen the research IT ecosystem beyond IT@JH.
  • Works directly with investigators and their teams to support and advance their research as well as work directly on research proposals and awards as required.
  • Operates with autonomy around services, projects, personnel, and budget operations. When introducing new patterns, projects, or budget requests, the position will work with a broader team to ensure consensus and the appropriate review and feedback.


Special Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities

  • Research lifecycle and associated IT systems that support it.
  • Research proposal and award lifecycle.
  • NIH Rigor and Reproducibility standard.
  • Federal government data management requirement.

Technical Qualifications or Specialized Certifications

  • Interoperability standards and practices.
  • Research compliance and privacy regulations, including HIPAA, NIST 800-171, NSPM-33, etc.


Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor's Degree.
  • Ten years of related experience which includes five years of management/supervisory experience.
  • Additional education may substitute for required experience and additional related experience may substitute for required education, to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.


Preferred Qualifications
  • At least 12 years experience working in direct support of research.
  • At least 7 years leading high performing teams and programs.
  • Experience with establishing and growing collaborative partnerships across a complex organization.
  • Must be highly skilled working with research IT platforms, such as biorepositories, compute clusters, electronic data capture systems, electronic laboratory notebooks, registries, etc.
  • Must have experience working with federal and state/local security and privacy requirements, such as HIPAA and NIST 800-171.
  • Must have well rounded experience in IT leadership, project management, service management, and IT solution design and integration.
  • Must have experience with designing solutions that align with interoperability and security best practices.
  • Preferred experience includes contributing the design and conduct of research studies.
