HJF is seeking a Scientist I in Preclinical Molecular Imaging to develop and conduct research projects in preclinical imaging research as well as work with investigators from USU to implement appropriate imaging into their projects. The Scientist I would be responsible for positron emission tomography (PET), single photon emission tomography (SPECT), optical imaging and CT. The Scientist I will be investigating a wide variety of scientific areas, mainly related to military relevant topics such as traumatic brain injury, treatments for a wide variety of injuries and exposures, wound healing, and pharmaceutical development. The PET/SPECT/CT program primarily uses 18F based radiotracers, including novel tracers for research. The Scientist I will work with a variety of small to medium sized animals and will follow all applicable animal research laws and regulations.

This position will be in support of the Department of Radiology and Radiological Sciences at the Uniformed Services University (USU). Dr. Hood is the Director of the Biomedical Research Imaging Core (BRIC), a preclinical imaging laboratory of the Department of Radiology that supports small animal research for USU. This position would support the molecular, optical, and computed tomography (CT) sections of the BRIC, to include post-processing and analysis of image data. The CT section includes a variety of in vivo and ex vivo micro CT systems. The BRIC also has preclinical magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), ultrasound and laser speckle imaging.

Note: This work site requires that non-US Citizen incumbents have lived in the US three out of the past five years.

Responsibilities
    Serves as the molecular imaging expert for the BRIC.
  • Responsible for handling a variety of radiotracers in a preclinical imaging lab as well as supervise all persons working in the PET/SPECT/CT area.
  • Oversee the documentation of all procedures and monitoring of animals as required by regulations.
  • Ensure the PET/SPECT/CT laboratory meets all radiation safety and animal research regulations.
  • Processes and interprets experimental data. Formulates experimental hypotheses and designs experimental protocols.
  • Makes scientific observations, maintains detailed workbooks/documentation, and ensures documentation fulfills generally accepted professional/industry standards.
  • Participates in conversations with investigators and contributes to new grant and funding applications.
  • Trains and supervises laboratory technicians, as needed.
  • Prepares written reports, abstracts, and manuscripts for submission to scientific journals and conferences.
  • May perform other duties and responsibilities as assigned or directed by the supervisor. This may include attendance of and participation in required training for role.
  • May participate or work with other imaging modalities as opportunities arise.
Qualifications

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Experience and knowledge with preclinical PET/CT.
  • Experience with rodent handling.
  • Experience with rodent injections.
  • Knowledge of applicable complex scientific procedures and techniques.
  • Excellent communication skills.
  • Ability to troubleshoot technical procedures.
  • Ability to work independently and supervise others.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a T1/Public Trust background check.

Supervisory Responsibilities

  • Assigned Lead: Participate in employee hiring, disciplinary action, and starting salaries; provide input on employee performance evaluations.

Physical Capabilities

  • Lifting: Requires lifting materials up to 25 lbs.
  • Ability to stand or sit at a computer for prolonged periods.
  • Ability to climb, pull, and lift heavy objects.

Work Environment

  • This position will take place primarily in a laboratory setting.

Education and Experience

  • Doctorate Degree required.
  • Minimum of 2-5 years experience required.
