General Summary of Position

MedStar Health is looking for a Mental Health Professional to join our team!

Day/Eve/Night and Weekend on-call shifts available.

As a Mental Health Professional, you will maintain responsibility for evaluating patients in the Emergency Department who present with psychiatric or related problems. Acts as consultant to staff in Emergency Department. Performs crisis intervention and counseling, support, and referral services to both psychiatric patients and their families.

Primary Duties:

  • Performs psychiatric assessments and mental status evaluations on all patients present in the Emergency Department with psychiatric disorders or complaints. Contacts and consults with the psychiatrist-on-call regarding diagnoses and recommendations for treatment for all psychiatric evaluations.

  • Maintains open and continuous communications with Emergency Department staff and consults with Emergency Department physician regarding final diagnosis and disposition plans.

  • Plans for hospital admission, transfer to another facility or follow-up for patients with a local agency. Uses age-appropriate games, rewards and praise when explaining and performing treatments and procedures.

  • Facilitates both voluntary and involuntary admissions by contacting insurance companies for preauthorization when necessary, giving reports to the accepting unit or facility and completing all appropriate paperwork.

  • Maintains logs on the computer of all patients formally evaluated by Mental Health Professionals in the Emergency Department. Documents in patient medical record. Attends Emergency Psychiatric Services staff meetings and other meetings as requested.

Qualifications:

  • MSW (Master of Social Work) or MSN (Master of Science in Nursing), or master's degree in counseling, Psychology or related field or Doctoral degree in Psychology or related field.

  • 1-2 years Clinical experience related to mental health.
