Job Description

Grace is seeking a motivated Sr R&D Scientist to join our R&D team in Materials Technologies! This role reports to the Research Fellow and is located at Columbia, MD.

Expertise in colloid chemistry is a prerequisite, while experience in inorganic oxide materials synthesis, specifically amorphous silica-based chemistry is preferred. Background in materials science is also desired. Familiarity with chemical process unit operations is a plus, as is experience interfacing with manufacturing operations. The individual is expected to perform basic theoretical and experimental scientific and technological investigation directed toward new product and process development in the field of silica products for many diverse applications including, but not limited to, coatings, refractories, and catalysis.

Responsibilities
  • Leads the planning and prioritization of projects, programs, and initiatives to ensure that business goals are met.
  • Designs and conducts independent, accurate and defendable scientific R/D activities in silica-based processes and products, with emphasis on the relationship between process parameters and product properties.
  • Works with Marketing, Sales and Technical Service for new product idea generation, business case justification and technological evaluations; builds relationships with customers to identify needs and develop next generation products and formulations.
  • Supports Manufacturing as needed.
  • Trains, mentors, and develops subordinates, and is responsible for their career development.
  • Designs experiments and manages day-to-day activities in the laboratory.
  • Effectively communicates 360 degrees within the organization.
  • Represents Grace's interest in attending professional society meetings and makes contributions per his/her area of expertise.
Required Qualifications
  • BS and PhD in Chemistry, with 3+ years of experience in Inorganic Chemistry, Material Science or Chemical Engineering research.
  • Significant success(es) in a technical environment

Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience in amorphous silica-based materials science and technology preferred.
