Job Description

The Maryland State Legislature has approved an ambitious capital improvement plan and a 4 - member Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) for Baltimore City Public Schools to overhaul its school facilities over the next ten years.

The Community and Public Relations Program Coordinator will be responsible for implementation of engagement strategies as schools undergo design, construction, maintenance, or transportation projects and improvement efforts. This position requires intensive engagement with school-based staff, parents, and communities, partners from receiving, closing and co-locating schools in order to develop a transition plan.These efforts are developed and managed to meet the goals of the 21st Century Plan, the CEO and the City Schools Board of Commissioners through the development and maintenance of partnerships with internal and external stakeholders to the program.

Essential Functions

  • Develops and supports the implementation of strategy to connect with school based- staff and surrounding communities impacted by Operations projects. Promotes positive relationships, coordination, and communication with external stakeholders and agencies needed for successful implementation of projects and improvement efforts.
  • Identifies and coordinates learning opportunities for students and school staff participation with architect and building teams as part of Operations design and construction process.
  • Assists in professionally developing and mentoring summer youth workers. Develops and maintains relationships with parents, students, staff, community and partners within receiving, closing and co-locating schools through one-to-one and group meetings in Operations' efforts.
  • Creates and maintains a comprehensive data base of community, faith, organizational and parent advocates.
  • Represents City Schools in school, community and partner's meetings on Operations Buildings and engagement strategy and activities.
  • Develops and presents Operations project updates to community and school agencies, neighborhood community associations, and others for input into program and transition planning.
  • Ensures appropriate levels of communication, including the selection of subject matter and informational materials, are created and distributed using a variety of media.
  • Organizes and hosts transportation and follow-up meetings at each school swinging to a temporary space.
  • Provides training for bus monitors and volunteer support (staff) to meet swing space transportation expectations.
  • Performs and promotes all activities in compliance with equal employment and nondiscrimination policies; follows federal laws, state laws, school board polices and the professional standards.

Desired Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree with an emphasis in education, social organization, or social Degree must be from an accredited college or institution.
  • Five years of experience in training, system change, community organizing or development in a non- profit, government or business setting.
  • Expertise with families and parent organizations or comparable community-based organizations. Thorough knowledge of types of methods of engaging parent/community in school activities.
  • Experience in communicating complex information related to facilities design and engineering, educational enrollment and planning data, integrated community development planning. Excellent verbal and written communication skills, including the ability to make effective public presentations.
  • Interpersonal skills that emphasize team-building.
  • Ability to analyze data and systems that can affect parents, communities and urban planning. Ability to work effectively in high-paced environment, with deadlines, and multiple stakeholder viewpoints.
  • Ability to work in a multidisciplinary team environment.
  • Proficient in the knowledge and use of technical computer applications including Microsoft Office.
