Summary

Under general direction of the Assistant Facilities Director, maintains medical gas system equipment, non-domestic and domestic water systems, drainage, and natural gas supply systems in safe and working condition. Installs, removes, services and make repairs to steam supply lines, condensate return lines, steam traps and steam operated equipment in hospital owned facilities. A strong knowledge of all piping fixtures, fixed appliances, and appurtenances in connection with all reverse osmosis deionized water, sanitary drainage, storm drainage, special wastes, and their venting systems. Locations are 20 Staniford Street and 243 Charles Street.

Role Duties

  1. Performs repairs, alterations and inspections of plumbing and pipe systems. Responds to emergency and trouble calls throughout the hospital and handles leaks, clogs, and various malfunctions of the piping system.
  2. Estimates amount of labor and cost of materials to perform work so that approval and funding can be obtained.
  3. Troubleshoots problems with the systems to reduce repair costs
  4. Submits stock requisitions to obtain materials for specific jobs and to maintain an inventory of repair parts.
  5. Keeps management informed of condition of systems so that capital requests can be made when major changes or repairs are needed.
  6. Maintains all backflow preventor devices. Coordinates inspection and replacements with Boston Water Sewer Commission
  7. Maintains grease traps, catch basins and floor drains
  8. Coordinates repair and maintenance efforts with other Facilities Department trades.
  9. Assists in organizing, assigning, and reviewing plumbing preventive and corrective work orders.
  10. Installs and repairs plumbing throughout the campus including, but not limited to domestic water booster system, sump pumping systems, piping valves, faucets, plumbing fixtures, drains, steam supply and condensate piping and steam traps
  11. Must also be proficient in the assembly and installation of different plumbing materials such as but not limited to iron, steel, glass, copper, HDPE and PVC.
  12. Must be able to perform soldering and caulk joints
  13. Must be knowledgeable of threading and roll/press grooving tools.
  14. Must be able to maintain oxygen, lab vacuum and medical air systems.
  15. Complete daily record of work completed
  16. a) Subject to a call in anytime for emergencies. b) Respond to problems of all trades during off shift hours as required.
  17. Ability to maintain wastewater treatment systems.
  18. Performs special projects and other duties as assigned.
Qualifications

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or Vocational education equivalent.
  • Commonwealth of Massachusetts Journeyman Plumber's License required, and Commonwealth of Massachusetts Master Plumber's license preferred.
  • Commonwealth of Massachusetts Industrial Operator License Grade 1 (Industrial) or required to obtain within one year upon employment.
  • Experience working with commercial and industrial plumbing and piping systems such as medical gases, fire sprinkler systems and large natural gas systems.
  • Ability to read and follow blueprints, knowledge of Massachusetts plumbing codes.
  • Knowledge of general plumbing principles to troubleshoot the Hospital's plumbing system in response to emergency and routine problems.
  • Ability to coordinate work with other departments, available to work overtime, and ability to provide own hand tools.
  • Understanding of the principles of steam distribution systems.

Working Conditions

Due to the hazardous environment and risk present in position, incumbent must adhere to all departmental and regulatory standards set for hazard/safety precautions in order to minimize risk and exposure.

Uses personal protection devices and actions to reduce risks and/or exposure to: noise, electricity, infectious material, sharp objects, steam (up to 100 psig), water pressure up to 300 psig and drain systems, respiratory hazards, fire, hot and cold environments, lifting/pushing, chemicals, heights and elevated platforms, wet surfaces, power tools, electrical wires and laboratory materials (chemicals, radioisotopes, etc.) introduced into the drain system. Works with chemicals. Exposed to local exterior climate extremes. Exposure to outside climate.

Lifting and pushing (15 to 44 lbs). Moving heavy equipment (over 100 lbs). Reaching, walking, bending, stooping, crawling, kneeling. Works in cramped areas.
