Summary

Medical Assistant, Longwood Otolaryngology **$750 Sign-on Bonus after 90 days of successful employment. Full Time with benefits M-F Days.

Under the supervision of departmental administrative, physician, and nursing staff, this position is responsible for coordinating the flow of patients throughout the outpatient exam process in accordance with the needs of the clinical practice.

Role Functions

  • Review daily schedule of patients making sure that all the appropriate preparations are in place to facilitate patient flow.
  • Currently with EPIC, the MA needs to go into CARE EVERYWHERE and update the record from LMR and reconcile the medications.
  • When rooming a patient, prepare template per physician requirements.
  • Review records for completeness of medical information needed for exam, i.e. reports of cultures, biopsies, x-ray results, and other laboratory findings.
  • Prepare patient for exam, treatment, and/or procedure. Bring patient into exam room and document in the Rooming section of EPIC the chief complaint, vital signs if required, medications, allergies, problem list, smoking status if not documented. NOTE: Some offices ask Past Medical history and Past Surgical history, and these items also should be documented.
  • Assist physician with in-office procedures, including set-up of supplies, instruments, and equipment.
  • Responsible for cleaning and sterilization of all equipment according to infection control standards.
  • Clean and sterilize equipment instruments, including scopes, and document on daily log sheets per MEE policy and standards. Ensure all instrumentation is fully functional and notify Manager when problems are identified.
  • Responsible for ordering medications from the pharmacy for each clinic. Maintain an inventory log sheet of clinic medications. Responsible for labeling expiration dates on medications.
  • Monitor the level of supplies in the clinics and orders supplies as needed to restock each exam room.
  • Replace needle boxes when -filled and beads in the bead sterilizer every six months.
  • Maintain knowledge in the operation and functionality of all equipment used in outpatient exam area. Report all equipment problems/issues in accordance with established MEEI and departmental policies.
  • Responsible for light housekeeping; i.e. cleanliness of equipment and cabinets in exam and procedure rooms.
  • Provide instructions and teaching tools for patients and families as needed.
  • Work collaboratively with departmental and MEE staff to provide quality patient care.
  • Participate in quality improvement activities and initiatives, as assigned by Manager.
  • Participate in all mandatory education sessions on an annual basis. Review, update and demonstrate knowledge of basic life support policies and procedures annually.
  • Maintain confidentiality of all patient information.
  • Participate in other projects and duties as assigned.

Qualifications
  • Excellent communication skills to promote harmonious working relationships among professional staff and between other disciplines and departments to provide quality patient care.
  • Ability to be a team player.
  • Strong organizational skills.
  • High school graduate or GED
  • Successful completion of certified training program.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

Patient care/clinical environment. High volume of interaction with patients, visitors, physicians, and other professional and ancillary staff.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

Lift frequently moderate weights; push wheelchairs/stretchers; assist patients to a standing position and support dependent weight as necessary. Transport equipment between exam rooms. Stand for long periods of time.

Potential exposure to environmental hazards and infectious materials are identified during annual mandatory education programs where techniques and procedures taught and adhered to will reduce/eliminate risk. Protection barrier equipment is readily available in all patient care areas and the staff is oriented to the location.
