Description

This is the clinical and administrative leader for the delivery of anesthesia care in the 6th floor operating rooms (i.e. Surgery Center) at the MEE. This individual is in charge of coordinating the clinical and educational activities of the CRNAs, residents, fellows and attendings on the Surgery Center (SC) floor. The division leader should be an expert with the anesthetic issues pertinent to the surgical cases in this area and should be an established clinical expert in this field. This person reports to the Chief of Anesthesia.

Specific daily responsibilities include the following:

  • Coordinate daily scheduling and assignments of appropriate anesthesiologists for SC cases in conjunction with the clinical director.
  • Facilitate efficient and safe flow-through of cases on day of surgery
  • Ensure fair distribution of cases among staff.
  • Ensure fair distribution of solo vs. CRNA
  • Coordinate educational opportunities for residents and SRNAs

Global responsibilities:

  • Establish clear mission and goals for area.
  • Communicate clear and written expectations and job description of staff in division.
  • Develop and implement clinical guidelines for the management of clinical cases in the ambulatory operating rooms that follow national standards of safety and care for ophthalmology and otolaryngology surgery.
  • Regularly communicate and update staff on anesthesia issues
  • Regularly report (at least quarterly) adverse events/morbidity/mortality to the department in written form. Report to the hospital personnel as required.
  • Mentor and develop the talents of other clinical staff working in the division.
  • Strive for efficiency without compromising safety in the clinical area
  • Arbiter of conflicts that may arise in the area between surgeons, anesthesiologists and nurses regarding clinical issues and efficiency.
  • Establish the standards for professionalism in the division.
  • Work effectively with surgeons and surgical leadership in the area. Regular meetings and appraisals of surgical expectations are expected.
  • Act as consultant for clinical issues for surgeons and other physicians in and outside our hospital for anesthesia issues pertinent to ambulatory care
  • Serve as liaison to the PACU and MOR for postoperative concerns for ambulatory patients
  • Establish preoperative processes for ambulatory cases in conjunction with preoperative director that is consistent with MOR process.
  • Play critical role in the recruitment and retention of anesthesiologists with the staff search committee and Chief of Anesthesiology.
  • Establish clear educational goals for the residents and fellows rotating in the SC. Have a written plan of goals and educational requirements. The resident educational plan should be separated and distinct for junior and senior residents.
  • Assess and report on residents to the program director monthly, or more frequently as needed.

Qualifications

- BE/BC Anesthesiology or equivalent - Meet all criteria for credentialing at the MEE - ACLS certification - MA Medical License - MA and Federal DEA license - Integrity, honesty and strong work ethic.

- Recognized excellence in this clinical area
