Job Description:

Assist pharmacists in performing a variety of duties related to the provision of pharmaceutical care to patients. These duties require knowledge of and skills in the preparation and distribution of drugs in various dosage forms. Responsible for unique tasks consistent with intern certification status requirement, and also performs specialized tasks not performed by other technicians. Supports pharmaceutical care for patients and complies with laws & regulations of appropriate state and federal agencies and guidelines of JCAHO.

Responsibilities:

Screens, prioritizes and routes copies of physician's orders to appropriate areas. Interprets, profiles and charges for physician orders under the direct supervision of a pharmacist.


Obtains supplies, prepares and labels drug orders under the direct supervision of a pharmacist. Calculates and compounds aliquot doses.


Distributes and/or transports medications and carts to appropriate patient care areas in a timely manner and under a pharmacist's supervision.


Monitors inventory levels, stocks shelves, maintains order and cleanliness in assigned areas and maintains all required records.


Provides training and participates in in servicing departmental employees and students in technical aspects of pharmacy services.


Makes beneficial recommendations for improvements in procedures, guidelines and continuing education training.


Exhibits good interpersonal skills in interacting with supervisors, peers and others outside pharmacy.


Receives and/or initiates verbal medication orders and checks another technician's refill of medications and/or repackaging of medications from bulk to unit dose if authorized to do so by his/her supervising pharmacist.


Performs other duties as assigned.



Requirements:

Education: Completion of a South Carolina Board of Pharmacy approved technician course OR current enrollment in a professional academic pharmacy program at an accredited university


Experience: Satisfactory progress maintained in the professional academic pharmacy program REQUIRED. Total of at least 1 year hospital pharmacy experience in addition to requirement PREFERRED.


Licensure, Registry or Certification Required: Current registration with SC Board of Pharmacy as a pharmacy intern


Special Training: Must have thorough knowledge of medical and pharmacy terminology; possess good mathematical skills; possess problem-solving abilities; able to work in team situations; able to handle urgent, stressful situations; Corporate and departmental mandatory training required annually; must have thorough knowledge of National, State, and Corporate regulations and standards.
