The Alaka'ina Foundation Family of Companies (FOCs) is looking for a Scientific Research Investigator to provide support services to a customer in Edgewood, MD.

DUTIES INCLUDE:

  • Providing scientific research support to all divisions in support of the research mission.
  • Operating, coordinating use, maintaining, and providing expert guidance on developing and applying NMR techniques to the questions at hand specifically with regard to the Agilent 600 MHz NMR & Bruker EMX Plus systems.
  • Providing NMR support for the performance of biophysical and biochemical experiments using NMR.
  • Conducting experiments and provide data on the physiological and behavioral effects of chemical warfare agents (CWA) and medical treatment compounds in small and large animal models.
  • Overseeing collection and storage of experimental data, compile and analyze the experimental data, and summarize the results in graphical and textual form.
  • Overseeing the operations of small and large animal laboratories, maintain computer hardware, and provide guidance to research technicians and Veterinary staff.
  • Contributing to publishing research findings in peer- reviewed journals and technical reports and will present findings at scientific conferences.
  • Evaluating the pharmacokinetics of CWAs and related compounds.
  • Assessing purity and integrity of pretreatment/treatment compounds
  • Investigating NMR as a tool for determining chiral chemistry in CWA compounds.
  • Performing EPR studies involving various spin traps for in vitro and in vivo system.
  • Providing periodic written updates including text, tables, figures, graphs, results and conclusions regarding progress of projects.
  • Conducting studies assessing medical countermeasures against chemical warfare nerve agent exposure in rodents.
  • Performing small animal surgery.
  • Performing tissue collection and perfusions.
  • Analyzing physiological (EEG, ECG, blood pressure, temperature, and/or activity), behavioral, and neuroanatomical data in small animal models.
  • Interpreting findings and prepare graphs and reports on data analysis.
  • Preparing posters, manuscripts, and presentations.
  • Orally presenting findings before laboratory and/or other scientific groups.
  • Traveling and presenting findings at scientific meetings, conferences, and events.
  • Maintaining literature database of relevant scientific articles.
  • Providing expertise in the area of assessment of behavioral and physiological toxicity of nerve agents, and in the evaluation of countermeasures against nerve agents in small and large animal models using neuroanatomical, molecular, physiological, and functional endpoints.
  • Conducting experiments and provide data on the physiological and behavioral effects of chemical warfare agents (CWA) and medical treatment compounds in small and large animal models.

REQUIRED SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE:

  • Must have experience in physiological and neuroanatomical assessments.
  • Must have demonstrated knowledge of data analysis with large data sets of electroencephalographic activity (EEG) for seizure identification and power analysis.
  • Must have experience with basic computer programs (i.e., word processing, spreadsheets, statistics software programs, imaging software, and reference management programs) as well as use of MATLAB for signal processing.
  • Must have experience with measuring and assessing seizure activity in animal models, in development of animal models for assessment of medical countermeasures against chemical warfare nerve agents.
  • Must have experience with grant writing, publications and presentations is required.
  • Must have excellent writing skills.
  • Must have experience in using light and fluorescent microscopy and software programs (ImagePro, ImageJ).
  • Must be able to work independently as well as train others.

DESIRED SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE:

  • Experience with stereology is preferred.
  • Experience with reference management software (i.e., Endnotes), Data Sciences International software (Neuroscore, Ponema), graphics software (Sigmaplot), and statistics software (SPSS) is preferred.

REQUIRED EDUCATION/CERTIFICATIONS:

  • Must have a PhD in Psychology, Biology, Pharmacology, Neuroscience or a related research area from an accredited university.

CITIZENSHIP:

  • Must be a US Citizen.
  • Must have, or be able to obtain, an Interim Secret security clearance.
