Job Requirements

Knowledge of architecture is greatly desired. Knowledge of urban planning, landscape architecture, and/or the history of architecture is preferred.

Outstanding editing, writing, and verbal communications skills; experience in editorial project management and managing writers, editors, and designers required. Ability to multitask with overlapping assignments, multiple deadlines, and shifting priorities.

Proficient with email marketing systems such as Real Magnet, as well as digital publishing tools such as Drupal, Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Illustrator, and Adobe Dreamweaver. Experience managing complex multimedia projects involving interactive, video, and audio components desired.

Bachelor's degree in Journalism, English, Communications, New Media, or related field and a minimum of five years of experience working as part of a digital publishing team required.

Supervisory requirement:

No direct supervisory responsibilities but will manage assignments for internal and external writers, designers, developers, and videographers, as needed.

Job Description

This is a professional position in the Strategic Communications and Content department reporting to the Sr. Director, Digital Content. The Writer/Editor works with other communications and marketing team members to implement the content strategy and editorial direction of AIA communications and AIA-branded content, externally and internally, in a highly collaborative environment. The incumbent adapts strategic messages and story lines for reported articles, speeches, talking points, ad copy and member communications intended for specific internal and external audiences.

Job Duties

Content development and management:

  • Manage development and production of digital content through e-mail, social media, websites, and other channels.
  • Develop and execute communications for digital and print outlets, social media, talking points and speeches, in collaboration with executive and leadership communications, editorial, marketing, and public and media relations teams.
  • Collaborate with both members and staff, with a goal of implementing and maintaining content development strategies for AIA websites consistent with the AIA strategic and operational goals, best practices, and brand guidelines.
  • Create and maintain digital content workflows and processes using digital publishing tools.
  • Create and adhere to published production and editorial calendars and maintain editorial standards of quality and accuracy.
  • Conduct, research, interview, and write stories for AIA publications with an emphasis on solid reporting and audience engagement.
  • Coordinate the editing and proofreading for articles.
  • Write, rewrite and fact check copy as needed.
  • Research, assign, and/or coordinate development of charts, graphics, and illustrations, including online multimedia, videos, and podcasts.

Institute and member content integration

  • Participate in recurring editorial and communications planning meetings to engage with staff, enhance collaboration throughout the Institute, and develop content ideas.
  • Provide ad copy and editing support for marketing materials as needed.
  • Stay abreast of the latest technology and practice trends within the broader architecture and design community
  • Collaborate with teams and departments around the AIA, along with member groups and committees, to identify story lines and execute coordinated and effective content.
