Job Description

Roche is seeking a highly-motivated biology postdoctoral fellow to work with Emulate's Organs-on-Chips technology. In this role, you will work within a creative, collaborative, and dynamic team made up of biologists, designers, and engineers.

Please note that you will be based at Emulate's offices in Boston for the duration of the contract. As this position is of high importance we are looking for people who could join the team in 2018 already (ideally in November 2018 already).

You will focus on studying the specific activation of T and B cells in the context of inflammatory disease, tumors, or in response to immunomodulatory agents - all in a lymph node Organ-Chip. The position involves new model development and requires co-development of functional immune assays with team members across the company. You will be working alongside talented scientists, engineers, and designers who are creating highly innovative new technologies and products that positively impact human health and society.

As a postdoc you're going to join our international team in an outstanding and competitive scientific environment and you will hold several of these primary responsibilities:

  • Design and develop a lymph node model that includes critical cell types and microenvironment factors that recapitulate main aspects of lymph node functionality
  • Design assays to probe mechanisms of lymphocyte activation and the interplay between different cell types in the lymph node
  • Develop multi-parametric analyses of immune cell function, data analysis, and interpretation
  • Culture primary and stem cell-derived immune cells, expand and analyze antigen-specific T and B cell responses, and assess the effect of immunomodulatory agents
  • Perform flow cytometry and cell sorting
  • Assist in technology development and model improvements
  • Publish in peer-reviewed journals and present in scientific meetings

We are looking for a highly motivated and energetic person who recently obtained her/his PhD and has strong verbal and written communication skills as well as the ability to work independently and innovatively in a fast-paced environment.

If you bring as well the following we are looking forward to receiving your application:

  • PhD in immunology or immuno-biology, immune-oncology or a similar area required
  • Strong technical, analytical, time-management skills as well as working knowledge of experimental design and statistical analysis
  • Expertise with T and/or B cell activation, microscopy imaging, and biological assays for cell functions characterization and FACS sorting
  • Experience in human primary cell culture and immunocyte differentiation
  • Experience in gene editing techniques, metabolic function analysis as well as hands-on experience with stem cell biology is a plus

About Roche

At Roche, about 80,000 people across 150 countries are pushing back the frontiers of healthcare. Working together, we've become one of the world's leading research-focused healthcare groups. Our success is built on innovation, curiosity and diversity, and on seeing each other's differences as an advantage. To innovate healthcare, Roche has ambitious plans to keep learning and growing - and is seeking people who have the same goals for themselves.

About Emulate, Inc.

We work at the intersection of biology, engineering, and design, developing technologies that emulate human biology. Our products are enabling a new era of precision medicine and the development of applications for personalized health.

Our Human Emulation System, which uses Organs-on-Chips technology, is being used by industry, government, and academia to understand how different diseases, medicines, chemicals and foods affect human health. The system offers researchers a new standard for predicting human response - with greater precision and control than today's cell culture or animal-based experimental methods.

We are also leading a bold, new precision medicine initiative with our clinical partners. Named "Patient-on-a-Chip," the program is developing personalized chips with patients' own cells. This initiative will help transform the way each of us understands our own bodies and manages our own health.

Research conducted using our Organ-Chips has been published in high-impact scientific journals, including Science. In addition, Organ-Chips have been acquired by the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) in New York for their permanent collection and have also been awarded Product Design of the Year 2015 by London's Design Museum.

Our founding team pioneered the original Organs-on-Chips technology during their residency within the Wyss Institute for Biologically Inspired Engineering at Harvard University.
