| HJF is seeking a Postdoctoral Fellow for the Resuscitative and Trauma Medicine Department located at the Naval Medical Research Center (NMRC) in Silver Spring, MD. HJF provides scientific, technical and programmatic support services to NMRC. The Postdoctoral Fellow will study basic mechanisms of cell and tissue damage resulting from exposure to blast overpressure. This is a challenging opportunity with an exciting research program focused on the histopathology and molecular biology aspects of brain and lung damage and definition of possible targets for pharmaceutical therapy after exposure to blast. Responsibilities: 1. Initiate and carry out research projects in collaboration with a research team. 2. Assist in designing, developing, executing, and implementing scientific research and/or development. 3. Investigate the feasibility of applying a wide variety of scientific principles and theories to potential inventions and products. 4. Perform specialized laboratory research utilizing experimental protocols which will involve specialized procedures such as proteomics and genomics analysis of tissues, histo-immunochemistry, molecular analysis of specific RNA transcripts by quantitative RT-PCR or Northern analysis, analysis of protein expression by Western blotting, small animal surgery, animal injections, and data processing. 5. Collect and handle samples and keeps detailed records of experiments. 6. Assist with the preparation of data for presentations at scientific meetings and for publication in journals. 7. Assist with training laboratory staff as needed. 8. Maintain cleanliness of laboratory areas. 9. Perform other duties as assigned. Knowledge of appropriate scientific area; Ability to analyze and interpret data. Minimum Education: PhD in a related scientific discipline and/or MD with basic surgery skills or clinical experience. Previous experience with molecular biology and histopathology is preferred. Minimum Experience: 0-2 years Physical Capabilities: Long periods of standing and sitting; intricate work with hands; carrying of light and moderately heavy laboratory equipment Supervisory Responsibilities/Controls: May provide guidance to laboratory staff Work Environment: Laboratory environment; may involve working with biohazardous materials; may require working evenings and weekends Any qualifications to be considered as equivalents, in lieu of stated minimums, require the prior approval of the Director of Human Resources |
