Community Outreach to Veterans

Vet Centers provide readjustment counseling and outreach services to all veterans who served in any combat zone. Services are also available for their family members for military related issues. Veterans have earned these benefits through their service and all are provided at no cost to the veteran or family. The Department of Veterans Affairs Vet Center program operates a system of 232 community based counseling centers. The Vet Centers are staffed by small multi-disciplinary teams of dedicated providers, many of which are combat veterans themselves.

The Army Career and Alumni Program (ACAP) was created by the Army to provide world-class transition and job assistance services to the Soldiers and civilian employees and their family members who have selflessly served their nation. Supporting Homeless and American Veterans Since 1993. Did you know that one-third of the homeless are veterans? Did you know that there are 400,000 homeless veterans on the streets tonight? The Circle of Friends for American Veterans is fighting back by actively supporting programs that help create jobs for motivated veterans who want to work.

Fort Belvoir is home to one Army major command headquarters and elements of 10 others; 19 different agencies and direct reporting units of the Department of Army; eight elements of the U.S. Army Reserve and the Army National Guard; and 26 DoD agencies. The Employment Readiness Program (ERP) is available for active duty and their immediate family members, DOD civilians and their immediate family members, Retirees and their immediate family members, Reservists/National Guard and their immediate family members. The Network of Care for Veterans & Service Members is part of a growing awareness and effort to take a community approach to the needs of returning veterans, to ensure that they are a valuable part of a healthy community and that the community is a meaningful part of the health of the veteran. The Network of Care for Veterans & Service Members is a one-stop-shop for virtually all services, information, support, advocacy, and much more.

IAVA’s mission is to improve the lives of Iraq and Afghanistan veterans and their families. IAVA addresses critical issues facing new veterans and their families, including mental health injuries, a stretched VA system, inadequate health care for female veterans, and GI Bill educational benefits.

NABVETS will provide personal advocacy on behalf of veterans seeking claims against the United States Department of Veterans Affairs; advocacy for youth in all matters required for successful passage into adulthood; advocacy on behalf of families; with community involvement, provide advocacy in creating positive lifestyles for veterans; and to generate and preserve the historical record.

The American Legion was chartered and incorporated by Congress in 1919 as a patriotic veterans organization devoted to mutual helpfulness. It is the nation’s largest veterans service organization, committed to mentoring and sponsorship of youth programs in our communities, advocating patriotism and honor, promoting a strong national security, and continued devotion to our fellow servicemembers and veterans.

Since 1997, the DC Metro site has served homeless veterans through the strategic placement of Americorps members. Members have served throughout the continuum of care in Washington, DC metropolitan area, Baltimore, Maryland and Martinsburg, West Virginia. In August 2003, DC Metro opened a 24-bed Shelter Plus Care program for formerly homeless veterans in recovery. Veterans at Ignatia are provided with case management, sobriety support, employment and training assistance, career/computer center and a service provider is on site 24/7.
